The HI subs embedded in KUCHU's release - which I presume were simultaneously ripped from The Criterion Channel - are basically fine. However, as the video track includes hardcoded English text for non-English dialogue, etc., there's a lot of overlap between the embedded and the hardcoded subtitling.
So I've gone through and removed all the lines from the embedded subs, which are already hardcoded into this rip - leaving, more or less, just English subtitles for the English parts of the film.
I've also removed HI-descriptions and interjections unneeded for non-HI subs, and I've resynced lines previously containing a mix of HI and non-HI accordingly.
Like I said, the subs as they were, were more or less fine, but I've still done a bit of cleaning up, reformatting, correction of line breaks... to fit my own liking.
But I guess, the main attraction for most with these subs, will be to avoid having duplicated text overlapping on screen.
